Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. According to a survey 60% of adults have moderate-to-severe periodontal disease of which majority suffer from gingivitis (gum disease) and nearly 80% have some form of attachment loss (gums that are pulling away from the teeth). The commonly performed procedure for such problems are:
Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing is a common non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. By using special instruments, bacteria and infection is removed from the unhealthy deep pockets around the teeth below the gum line. This is often referred to as a “deep cleaning”.
First the tooth is scaled to remove the plaque and tarter that has accumulated on the tooth.
Then the root is planed or smoothed. This eliminates any rough areas on the root that can easily trap plaque and bacteria.
A smooth clean root provides a healthy environment to allow the gums to heal naturally and reattach to the tooth. This will create a reduced pocket, therefore eliminating areas for bacteria to hide and cause further disease.Scaling and Root Planing combined with a strict home care routine and more frequent periodontal cleanings and exams will increase your chances of keeping your natural smile.
Nonsurgical Treatment
Local Drug Delivery (Tetracycline, Chlorhexidine etc)
Gingival diseases are the most widely held oral diseases worldwide. In some patients, periodontal disease appears in a generalized form, but more often it appears in localized areas. Furthermore, after treatment with scaling and rootplaning in generalized cases, the disease is often reduced to a few local areas in the patient’s mouth. Since periodontitis ( gum and bone disease) is a bacterial infection with known pathogenic microorganisms, the local delivery of antimicrobials has been considered to be a possible solution for treating and controlling localized forms of periodontal disease. The most commonly used for of these antimicrobials in the form of local delivery drugs are doxycycline , chlorhexidine , minocycline , tetracycline and metronidazole.
Loose Teeth Splinting
Cosmetic Splints
Extremely thin fiberglass band (0.05 mm / .0019″) to be used with our Fiber-Bond or any light-cured bonding agents. The band is 4mm wide, which gives 30% more adhesion power to the interdental area. Indicated for periodontally loosened teeth, post-traumatic mobility, surgical reimplantation, or even to reinforce temporary bridges. It can also be used as splinting material for orthodontic stabilization. Strength with a certain degree of flexibility and “tooth hugging” quality combine for an overall aesthetic and functional result. Minimum tooth preparation and high patient acceptance.
Pocket Depth Reduction
Periodontal Flap Surgery
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects bone and gums around teeth. Deep gum pockets can form and, if left untreated, these pockets collect more bacteria producing dental bone loss. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the teeth need to be extracted. Periodontal, or osseous, surgery is a gum pocket reduction procedure. The infected bone and gum tissue are removed and the surrounding area where bacteria can hide is cleaned and smoothed out allowing gums to reattach to healthy bone and eliminate gum pockets. If bone and tissue loss is too severe, the diseased bone or tissue may need to be regenerated by performing advanced bone and tissue regenerated.
“During osseous surgery, the calculus(calcified deposits on the teeth) is removed and the bone is recontoured to the ideal shape. This procedure allows the gingiva to heal properly.”
What are the benefits of this procedure?
Reducing pocket depth and eliminating existing bacteria are important to prevent damage caused by the progression of periodontal disease and to help you maintain a healthy smile. Eliminating bacteria alone may not be sufficient to prevent disease recurrence. Deeper pockets are more difficult for you and your dental care professional to clean, so it’s important to reduce them. Reduced pockets, daily oral hygiene and professional dental maintenance care increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth and decrease the chance of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease.
Bone & Tissue Regeneration
When the damage caused by Periodontal Disease is significant, a Bone and Tissue Regeneration procedure may be necessary to save your teeth. During this treatment the gum is folded back and the underlying disease causing infected tissue is removed, application of antibiotic medication along with placement of bone grafts and guided tissue regeneration membrane.
